The mission of the Family Care Councils (FCCs) it to educate and empower individuals with developmental disabilities and their families, partnering with the Agency for Persons with Disabilities, to bring quality services to individuals with dignity and choice.
July 2023 marked 30 years since the creation of the Family Care Councils. The Statewide Council and 15 Local Family Care Councils are made up of Governor-appointed volunteers dedicated to educating, empowering, and advocating for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Florida, along with their families. In partnership with the Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD), the Family Care Councils ensure that self-advocates and families have a meaningful voice in shaping statewide policies that support people in living, learning, and working within their communities.
While we are proud of how far we’ve come, there is still much more to do—and that’s where you come in. Family Care Council members include individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as parents, siblings, grandparents, and guardians of those eligible for APD services. Together, we mentor families, educate legislators, host educational forums, review APD policies, and advocate for positive change across the state.
We invite you to get involved by becoming a member and connecting with your local council. Share your story, build relationships with others on similar journeys, and explore our website to learn more about available resources and opportunities.
